Silicosis - An Irreversible Killer

Silicosis is one of the world's oldest occupational diseases. And although we know what causes silicosis and how to prevent silicosis, it still kills close to 300 Americans each year and many more worldwide. Silicosis is a progressive lung disease caused by the inhalation of crystalline silica dust. These small particles of silica dust are released into the air when rocks, sand, quartz, and other materials that contain silica are crushed, cut, ground or otherwise disturbed.

Is Silicosis a Risk At Your Job?

Roughly 2 million workers are regularly exposed to silica dust each year on the job in the United States. About 100,000 of these two million are expected to develop silicosis. A higher amount of silica dust exposure for prolonged periods is attributed to faster developing, more severe cases of silicosis. Sandblasters are at an extremely high risk of developing silicosis - so much so, that the disease is sometimes referred to as "sandblasting disease." Miners and shipyard workers are also at an increased risk of crystalline silica dust exposure and developing silicosis. The silicosis attorneys outline some of the most dangerous occupations with regard to silicosis.
